Gardeners Collier Row Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Collier Row is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, clients, visitors and contractors. This policy sets out our overall approach to managing health and safety in all gardening, grounds maintenance and related activities carried out by our company.
We recognise our responsibilities under relevant health and safety legislation and industry best practice. We aim to prevent accidents, injuries and ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing sensible control measures for all gardening work we undertake in residential and commercial outdoor spaces.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our main objectives are to protect the health, safety and welfare of everyone who may be affected by our work and to promote a culture where safety is an integral part of everyday operations. Specifically, we aim to:
Identify and manage risks linked to gardening tasks, equipment and chemicals. Provide clear instructions, information, training and supervision to our team. Maintain tools, machinery and vehicles in a safe condition. Use appropriate personal protective equipment for all relevant tasks. Minimise risks to clients, visitors and members of the public in and around work areas. Continuously improve our health and safety performance through regular review.
Management Responsibilities
Company management has overall responsibility for implementing and monitoring this Health and Safety Policy. Management will ensure that:
Suitable and sufficient risk assessments are carried out for gardening activities, including lawn care, hedge cutting, tree work within our competence, planting, clearance and waste handling. Safe systems of work are developed and communicated for routine and non-routine tasks. Employees are competent for the work they carry out and receive appropriate induction and ongoing training. Incidents, near-misses and complaints relating to safety are recorded, investigated and used to improve procedures. Adequate resources are provided to maintain safe working conditions, equipment and welfare arrangements.
Employee Responsibilities
Every member of staff has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Employees are expected to:
Follow all safety instructions, training and company procedures. Use tools, machinery and chemicals only as trained and authorised. Wear the personal protective equipment provided and maintain it in good condition. Report hazards, defects, accidents, near-misses and health concerns to management without delay. Refrain from horseplay, misuse of equipment or any behaviour that could create risk. Cooperate with health monitoring, training and any safety initiatives introduced by the company.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before starting work, a suitable risk assessment is undertaken where necessary, taking account of the site conditions, client requirements and specific tasks involved. Control measures are put in place to reduce risks to an acceptable level.
Safe working practices cover, but are not limited to: manual handling of soil, plants, compost, waste and equipment; use of powered tools such as mowers, trimmers, blowers and hedge cutters; working at height within our competence using ladders and platforms; working near roads, driveways and public footpaths; use, storage and disposal of garden chemicals and fuels.
Use of Tools, Machinery and Vehicles
All equipment and vehicles used by Gardeners Collier Row must be suitable for the task, properly maintained and used only by competent personnel. We will:
Carry out regular inspections and servicing of tools, machinery and vehicles. Remove from service any items found to be defective until they are repaired or replaced. Provide instructions and training on the safe operation of all equipment. Ensure guards, safety devices and emergency stops are in place and functional. Plan the loading, unloading and transport of equipment to prevent injuries and damage.
Chemicals, Substances and Environmental Considerations
Where we use garden chemicals, fertilisers, fuels or any other potentially hazardous substances, we will follow safe handling and storage procedures. This includes:
Obtaining and following manufacturers guidance for safe use. Using only trained personnel to apply chemicals and strictly following application rates. Storing substances securely and away from children, pets and wildlife. Preventing spills and contamination of soil, drains and watercourses as far as reasonably practicable. Disposing of waste and empty containers responsibly and in line with legal requirements.
Protection of Clients, Visitors and the Public
We are committed to safeguarding the health and safety of clients, visitors, neighbours and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening work. To achieve this, we will:
Plan work to minimise disruption and risk in shared or public areas. Use barriers, cones or warning signs where appropriate, especially when using powered tools or working near paths and driveways. Keep work areas tidy and remove tools, equipment and waste promptly. Communicate clearly with clients about any short-term restrictions on access during higher-risk activities. Ensure that vehicles are parked and manoeuvred safely, taking account of pedestrians and limited visibility.
Personal Protective Equipment
Personal protective equipment is provided where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. Depending on the task, this may include safety footwear, gloves, eye and hearing protection, respiratory protection, high-visibility clothing or protective clothing.
Employees must wear the protective equipment supplied whenever required, keep it in good condition and report any damage or defects immediately so that replacements can be arranged.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Arrangements
All accidents, injuries, cases of ill health and near-misses arising from our work must be reported to management as soon as possible. We will record and review these events to help prevent recurrence.
Basic first aid equipment is carried in our vehicles or is available on site where necessary. Staff are briefed on how to summon medical assistance in an emergency and on any specific site rules that apply at client properties.
Training, Information and Supervision
Gardeners Collier Row provides health and safety training appropriate to each role, including induction for new starters and additional training when work methods, equipment or regulations change. Supervisors ensure that employees are following safe practices and that any shortcomings are addressed promptly.
We provide information to staff about the risks associated with gardening work in our service area and the measures in place to control these risks.
Policy Review
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and updated as required to reflect changes in legislation, guidance, work practices and the nature of services we offer. Any significant changes will be communicated to staff and, where relevant, to clients and contractors.
By working together and following this policy, Gardeners Collier Row aims to maintain safe, well-managed gardening services for all those who may be affected by our activities.
